Shoreline observation protocol

A reference document with definitions, a data table, a code example, and explicit limitations.

Use this illustrative protocol to understand the publishing pattern. It is not a validated scientific method.

A record describes one observation at one place and time. Comparisons require compatible methods and conditions.

Required fields
FieldFormatPurpose
record_idStable text identifierConnect revisions to the original observation
observed_atISO 8601 timestamp with offsetIdentify the observation time
siteLocation referenceIdentify the observation point
conditionsPlain textRecord tide, weather, and limitations
{
  "record_id": "north-001",
  "observed_at": "2026-10-28T09:00:00-04:00",
  "site": "North transect",
  "conditions": "Illustrative record; no real measurement"
}

Keep the original timestamp and record the reason for a correction. A changed method requires a new protocol version, not a silent alteration to an old result.
